COMMENTS:
These recordings mark Jimi's first and last shows with the Experience in 1969 including some studio jams during the same time period. The studio work with John McLaughlin and Johnny Winter demonstrate Jimi's need to diversify and try new realms within music. Although Hendrix kept to the Experience, he yearned for something different and maybe more provocative.
Also, the Experience were having rough times keeping focused in '69, especially between Noel and Jimi throughout the tour. Between Mitch, Noel and Jimi, some of the best and most intense jams came out of '69. The ferocious version of Hear My Train at the end of the first disc shows how powerful some of the jams were getting between the 3 players even at the beginning of the tour. Sometimes Jimi would even take it up a notch in playing. To close the Gothenburg show, Jimi does the entire Star Spangled Banner with his teeth.
The studio recordings reflect Jimi's intent to create new ideas with the help of other musicians. The jams with Johnny Winter have been
floating around the underground trading circuit for years. The song from these sessions that has been on numerous other bootlegged recordings is Things I Used to Do. Stephen Stills also lends a hand on bass for these sessions.
These recordings are good examples of Jimi's ability to perform in the studio and on stage. The one problem I have with these recordings is that both versions of Red House are cut. The end of the song is cut on the first disc and the very beginning of the song at Denver. They are both great versions too. Finally, riots plagued their last show in Denver at which the "fans" tore up the stage at the end of the show that would end the career of the Experience. Both extremes of highs and lows can be found on these recordings to present you with the turbulent year of 1969 and Jimi Hendrix.
By all means, enjoy these recordings and enjoy Jimi. This may not be the most pristine and rare recordings of Jimi, but just enjoy the music as it is and how Jimi presents it. It's all he wanted from us as listeners and music lovers.
